Hi Readers,
How well do you know the city you live in? Despite living in the bay area for many years, I felt like a newbie until I started intentionally taking the time to explore the area. Feeling like a stranger in your own city too? Fear not, fellow curious minds – here's how to rediscover the hidden gems and get to know your city.
Tap into local government resources. You’re paying taxes, make sure you’re making the most of your cities' free resources too! Sign up for email or social media updates from your city and county. You might discover hidden gems like free leadership summits, city funded celebrations, free water saving devices or even a refreshing public pool dip at a hefty discount.
Local news knows where the hidden gems are. Local independent news (particularly their email newsletters) are one of the best ways to uncover hidden gems. From unique (and often free!) events to the latest restaurant buzz, they'll keep you in the loop. My hidden gems found thanks to local media included a candidate debate for congressional candidates and my favorite bakery Sweet Diplomacy (they ship!).
Using tech to power your adventures. Looking for even more events and places to explore. Check out event focused apps like Eventbrite and your local subreddit. I also keep a list of places I want to explore as a favorite list in my map app of choice so if I’m feeling spontaneous, I can just open the app and go.
Make time for exploration on your calendar. Try blocking off 10 minutes a week to make sure you go through at least a few of the resources above and put them in your calendar or “to-explore” list. A little bit of planning can lay the groundwork for some great exploring.
Let’s explore together!
I’m always trying to get to know my city better. Readers, share your favorite city-exploring tips in the comments below
Stay Curious,
Teri
